Netherlands first NATO nation to buy U.S. weapons for Ukraine in $500M aid

The Netherlands has become the first NATO country to purchase military equipment directly from the United States for Ukraine, Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren (VVD) announced Monday. The 500 million euros (540 million U.S. dollars) support package will supply Ukraine with critical defense materials, including components for Patriot air defense systems, ammunition, and other essential items tailored to Ukraine’s needs, according to RTL Nieuws.

The initiative follows a July 14 agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, designed to increase coordinated military aid to Ukraine through direct procurement from the U.S. The new deal complements existing Dutch support, adding to nearly 6 billion euros in military assistance provided by the Netherlands since February 2022.

RTL political correspondent Fons Lambie noted the political and strategic significance of the arrangement: “This is the first time the new construct between the U.S., NATO, and European countries is being used to supply weapons to Ukraine. The Netherlands is among the frontrunners, but insiders expect more announcements from other European nations soon.”

After the NATO summit in The Hague, this was a tangible success for Rutte, who is working hard to maintain American support for Europe.”
