China lodges ‘solemn protest’ and demands justice from Myanmar over consulate attack

中方就领事馆遇袭事件提出“严肃交涉”，要求缅甸严惩肇事者

China has expressed “deep shock” and condemned an attack on its consulate in the second largest city in Myanmar and called on the Myanmar government to “deal with the perpetrators seriously”.

中国驻缅甸第二大城市曼德勒领事馆遇袭，中方对此“深感震惊”，并予以谴责，同时敦促缅甸政府“严惩肇事者”。

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China was “deeply shocked” by an attack on its consulate in Mandalay on Friday.

周一(10月21日)，在北京举行的例行新闻发布会上，外交部发言人林健表示，对中国驻曼德勒领事馆周五(10月18日)遭到袭击，中方“深感震惊”。

A consulate office building was damaged but no personnel were hurt in the attack, which involved an explosive device, according to Lin.

林建说，领事馆办公楼在袭击中受损，但没有人员受伤，袭击涉及一个爆炸装置。

“China has expressed its deep shock at the attack and sternly condemned it,” Lin said. “The Chinese foreign ministry and our embassy and consulate in Myanmar have immediately initiated our emergency response … and lodged a solemn protest with the Myanmar side.

“中方对袭击事件深表震惊，并予以严厉谴责。中国外交部和驻缅甸使领馆已迅速启动应急机制进行处置......并向缅方提出严肃交涉。”  

“We urged the Myanmar authorities to thoroughly investigate the attack, and spare no efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice, step up security for Chinese institutions, projects and personnel in Myanmar, and prevent similar incidents from happening again,” he added.

临建补充说：“我们敦促缅甸当局彻查此次袭击事件，全力抓捕并依法严惩肇事者，全面加大对中方在缅使领馆机构、项目和人员的安保力度，杜绝再次发生类似的事件。”

Following the attack on Friday, the Chinese consulate in Mandalay issued a security warning, urging all Chinese nationals, companies and organisations to pay close attention to local situations and step up security measures, China’s state media reported.

据中国官方媒体报道，周五(10月18日)袭击事件发生后，中国驻曼德勒总领事馆发出安全警告，敦促所有中国公民、公司和组织密切关注当地局势，加强安全措施。

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military junta deposed the government of Aung San Suu Kyi and seized power in 2021, and intense fighting broke out in northern Myanmar between local rebel groups and the military government.

自2021年缅甸军政府推翻昂山素季政府并夺取政权以来，缅甸一直处于动荡之中，缅甸北部的地方反叛组织与军政府之间爆发了激烈的战斗。

China has tried to play the role of peace-maker, and urged the military government and the rebels to come to terms and restore peace and stability as the turmoil threatens to destabilise its border area with Myanmar.

中国努力调停，敦促军政府和叛军达成和解，恢复和平与稳定，因为这场动乱有可能破坏中国与缅甸边境地区的稳定。

Fierce fighting in Myanmar's northern Shan state, which borders China's Yunnan province, has persisted since late October 2023. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled the area since the alliance of regional insurgents launched an offensive targeting junta troops. China has repeatedly expressed concern about the strife and called for an end to the fighting.
