The Chinese military's hospital ship Peace Ark, which is on its Mission Harmony-2024, provided free health services to thousands of local patients during its seven-day stay in Cape Town, South Africa.

在南非开普敦停留的7天时间里，正在执行“和谐使命-2024”任务的中国军队“和平方舟”号医院船，为数千名当地患者提供了免费医疗服务。

This is the Chinese floating hospital's maiden voyage to South Africa for a joint humanitarian exercise between the two countries. The ship arrived in the southernmost African nation last Thursday. During its stay in Cape Town, the medical team on board provided much-needed free care to local patients, treating 600 to 700 outpatients daily.

这是中国和平方舟浮动医院首次前往南非参加两国人道主义联合演习。和平方舟上周四(8月22日)抵达非洲最南端的国家南非。在开普敦逗留期间，船上的医疗团队为当地病人提供了急需的免费医疗服务，每天诊治600到700名门诊病人。

Inside the Peace Ark, patients were first assessed in the triage area. Doctors and nurses evaluated each case and gave the patients color tags to specify the care they needed.

“This mission has brought a whole lot of relief to those patients that couldn't access medical care. We have seen a whole lot of them, as the stats prove. As we stand. we have treated over 1,500 patients on the ship. And we are really expecting more because it has been a pickup in numbers with each daily activity,” said Colonel Tshinondiwa Mohale of the South African Military Health Service.

From general consultations to specialized treatments, the ship provided crucial medical care for patients who lack regular access to it.

"(It's) specifically for the people who are homeless and those who are in the shelters, because that is who we have been transporting up and down. We saw a lot of people who were on a backlog for the sonars, chest X-rays, and some CT scans that were done. So, that is really quite impressive," said Colonel Jeanette Morupi of the service.

On the hospital ship, doctors from both China and South Africa also collaborated to learn from each other's expertise.

"It was quite an incredible experience, especially seeing a South Africa-trained doctor who spent some time in China to actually learn how to do it properly. That was a really cool experience. It just feels, I can't even explain it, it's just like a release of pressure. It does feel like quite like a relief, it feels like I can rest my shoulders," said a patient named Amy Louwrens.

Beyond being a diplomatic gesture, the mission offers relief to South Africa's overburdened healthcare system.

"This is my best experience that I have ever had for my entire life. Wherever I had previous medical tests and stuff (like this), it hasn't been as professional as I have experienced now. Everyone is so friendly, everyone is so helpful, and it's going so quick," said another patient Bernard Deforce.

"I am feeling happy. I am feeling happy because this pain has been here for a long time. I used a lot of medicine, but now, I feel like I am going to leave everything here, everything is be beautiful. We appreciate it," said female patient Kuruthumu Kabanda, with relief and gratitude.

Since its launch mission in 2008, the Peace Ark has visited 45 countries and regions, providing medical services to over 290,000 people.
